Administrative Assistants

2020–2021 Position Description

Administrative Assistants are upbeat, organized, friendly undergraduates from all majors who are committed to helping their peers. Administrative Assistants coordinate and maintain the daily operations of the WMC, greet visitors with a smile, schedule appointments, maintain accurate records, and disseminate essential information about the WMC in person, over the phone, and via email. Through assisting others, Administrative Assistants gain valuable management experience, build their teamwork abilities, and hone their communication skills.

Communication Consultants

2020–2021 Position Description

Communication Consultants are considerate, articulate, high-achieving undergraduates from all majors who are committed to helping their peers. Communication Consultants offer individualized assistance to students across the disciplines working on any form of written, oral, visual, or electronic (WOVE) communication. Communication Consultants help students at all stages of the composition process, from brainstorming and organizing ideas to revising and polishing drafts. The WMC does not offer editing or proofreading services. Instead, Communication Consultants help students evaluate and improve the effectiveness of their own work. Through assisting others, Communication Consultants gain valuable teaching and teamwork experience, hone their communication skills, and become better writers themselves. 

Graduate Communication Consultants

2020–2021 Position Description

The primary role of a Graduate Communication Consultant is to engage writers in reflective conversations about their work. Consultants are not expected to provide editing services; rather, we believe the most effective and skilled practice is in asking questions that help writers see their work in new ways that aid in making revisions. The primary responsibility for GCCs is consulting. Consulting sessions begin on the hour or half-hour. Make sure you end each session on time (10 minutes to the hour for 50-minute and 5 minutes before the next appointment for 25-minute sessions). These breaks between consulting sessions are for you to complete the post-session client report form and take a moment to move, get a drink of water, or use the restroom; these breaks are also for the benefit of your next client because that gives you a chance to take a break between sessions and help you reset for your next appointment.

Graduate Communication Consultants also have the opportunity to expand their professional portfolios by taking on various roles within our unit.  These include:

  • Graduate Assistant Director (1/2 time assistantship)
  • Graduate Assistant Director for Student Affairs (1/2 time assistantship)
  • Media Coordinator (1/4 time assistantship)
  • Community Outreach Coordinator (1/4 time assistantship)
  • Grants Coordinator (1/4 time assistantship)
